Concert Review Setlist - Roger McGuinn with Marty Stuart and The Fabulous Superlatives 11/8/13

This may sound trite, but the concert on Friday Nov. the 8th, as I saw it, is best described by the name of the band, The Fabulous Superlatives!!! On every level this was a concert I will remember for a long time.

The ArtsQuest venue was new to me and I was impressed with the ease of finding it, the free ample parking, the friendly staff and the great sound and seating. It is a modern impressive structure built around the old Bethlehem Steel Works. The ruins of the old plant are used as a visual backdrop to the new and impressive entertainment complex. There are a couple of restaurants, and a movie theater housed next to the concert venue. The food was very good, the serviced just great and I would and plan to go back.

Marty Stuart and the Fabulous Superlatives took the stage with a thunderous explosion of applause from the sold out audience. It was evident that many folks were there to see Marty as the primary reason for coming that evening. His band is truly both fabulous and superlative. The line up is: Harry Stenson on drums and background vocals; Kenny Vughan on lead and acoustic guitar; Paul Martin bass and background vocals and Clarence the guitar accompanying Marty Stuart. Clarence is the guitar played by the fabled Clarence White. Clarence and Roger's Rickenbacker 370/12 guitars were stars in their own right getting numerous pictures taken of them before, during and after the show. Marty, who is a guitar collector, also owns 'Hank', a guitar once owned by Hank Williams Sr., and 'Wayne', a guitar owned by Wayne Moss who played it on “Pretty Women,” and “Almost Persuaded.” This is just a glimpse into his extensive collection.

The show started right at 7:30 and they hit the ground running and in full stride. The chemistry between and among the band, Marty and Roger just permeated the entire place. The fun they were having and the enthusiastic way they all engaged the audience made the night special. I was in the front row and I saw why Rolling Stone picked Roger as one of the top guitarist of all time that Rickenbacker ruled. Marty is one of Nashville's most accomplished musicians and he did not disappoint. His fingers were on fire. Their all around mastery just amazed me.

The set consisted of 25 numbers. Marty and Roger did a relay with the band and Roger alternating songs and at times Roger would go take a break.

Some of the songs, as you would expect, received more intense applause as well as audience participation. The artists did not have to encourage clapping, singing along or the numerous standing ovations. “Back Pages,” “Easy Rider,” "He Was A Friend,” “Turn,Turn,Turn,” “Spaceman” and of course “Mr. Tambourine Man,” were obvious crowd pleaser for Roger. For Marty “Stop The World,” Humminbyrd,” “Country Music Gotta Hold,” and of course “Whiskey Ain't Working,” had the audience up, clapping and singing.

I knew Marty was still a powerhouse, but I did not know what to expect from Roger. I had listened to Roger's 2007 live performance and thought he sounded great. He can still do it. I was not disappointed with his voice and I was impressed with his guitar work. I saw the Byrds in their heyday and I was still impressed with his performance. Yet another night of great live music performed by two legends who deserve the title. To top it off, I got the set list and managed to get it signed!!! I also got a CD signed by Marty, the band and Roger. At the end of the show, Marty Stuart came to the edge of the stage and handed me his guitar pick! It can't get much better!
