Princeton University to make meningitis vaccine available; Frank Rizzo Jr. Changes Political Party

Princeton University officials decided Monday that it will make a meningitis vaccine, that hasn't been approved in the U.S., available on campus to help stop the spread of the disease. Doses of the vaccine for type b meningococcal bacteria will be available in December and February for undergrads, graduates students living in dorms, and university employees with medical conditions that make them susceptible to meningitis. Since March, seven cases of meningitis has been confirmed on campus. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have recommended this plan. The FDA approved the importation of the vaccine, Bexsero, for use at the university.

Former City Councilman and son of the late mayor and police commissioner, Frank Rizzo Jr., has decided to change his party affiliation (again) in anticipation of making his own run for mayor in 2015. Rizzo Jr. is heading back to the Democratic Party. Rizzo changed his party to Republican in 1987 to support his father, Frank Rizzo Sr., when he became a Republican to run for mayor again. Rizzo Jr. served 16 years on City Council as a member of the GOP but says he always thought like a Dem. He does have the support of left wing leaders. US Rep. Bob Brady (D-Pa.), the city Democratic Party leader sat next to him today as he filled out his paperwork.

Phillies have re-signed Catcher Carlos Ruiz to a three-year, $26 million deal.

Tonight,
Clear skies and breezy, temperatures in the mid-50's this evening in Center City.
