Temple University Cuts 7 Sports Teams; Woman Arrested for Stealing Christmas Packages

Temple University announced this afternoon that it was shutting down seven of it's 24 intercollegiate athletic programs. This was the culmination of a seven-month-long analysis of the university's athletic department. They cited costs, inadequate facilities, and Title IX non-compliance as reasons for the cuts. Baseball, softball, men’s crew, women’s crew, men’s gymnastics, men’s outdoor track and field, and men’s indoor track and field are the sports that will be dropped after June of 2014. This affects 150 student-athletes (non-senior) and 9 full-time coaches. Scholarship athletes can continue to complete their degree with their scholarship honored and athletes can transfer to another school without losing a year of eligibility.

Police have arrested a woman for allegedly stealing Christmas packages in her South Philadelphia neighborhood. Surveillance shows 28-year-old Amanda Beason and a male accomplice taking packages from two homes on the 2900 block of South 17th street. They pulled up with their white SUV shortly after FedEx had delivered the packages, containing luggage and a keyboard, and took them from the doorsteps. Beason was recognized when the video aired on the news and internet and she turned herself in. Her accomplice is still at large but is urged to turn himself in. Police and FedEx caution homeowners to be cautious during the holiday season when expecting deliveries. If you are not going to be home, make arrangements with neighbors to pick up your delivery, leave directions with the carrier to drop it a safer place on your property, or pick it up at the carrier's office.
