Philadelphia residents can start dropping off their Christmas trees for recycling on Monday, January 6th. The Streets Department says the program will run for two weeks through Saturday, Jan. 18. Residents may drop off their trees for recycling at any of the following Streets Department Sanitation Convenience Centers Monday through Saturday from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.:
• 3033 South 63rd Street
• Domino Lane and Umbria Street
• State Road and Ashburner Street

Christmas trees brought to these sites should be:
• Free of all decorations and ornaments
• Free of plastic bags or wrappings
• Untied

The Streets Department says there will be no curbside collection of Christmas trees for recycling purposes. Trees left at the curb will be considered as trash and will be picked up on regularly scheduled trash days. Citizens who require additional information regarding the Christmas Tree Recycling Program may contact the Customer Affairs Unit at 215-686-5560. For all city services, call 3-1-1.

Philadelphia Police are investigating a shooting Monday afternoon that left one man dead in the 2100 block of W. Nedro Avenue in Ogontz. Officers found the 23-year-old victim in the back seat of a vehicle suffering from a gunshot wound to the back of his head. The victim was taken to Albert Einstein Medical Center where he was pronounced dead. While at the hospital, investigators say three alleged suspects were apprehended by police.
The shooting remains under investigation.

A big part of ushering in the New Year is, of course, the Mummers’ march down Broad Street! This year more than 1,000 Mummers will be led by what seems the unlikeliest of troupes: 37 teenagers from Colorado. Centennial, CO’s Arapahoe High School Marching Band has been chosen to lead the 2014 Mummers Parade. The trip is an exodus from recent sadness. On December 13, Arapahoe Student Karl Pierson entered the school in Centennial, Colorado and shot classmate Claire Davis in the head before taking his own life.

Weather, December 31

Partly Cloudy, and Windy. High 42 in Center City.
