Schuylkill Named River of the Year; Christie Signs Immigrant Tuition Bill; Cold Causes Car Troubles
  by: iradioal - Philadelphia, PA

The Schuylkill River has been named the 2014 Pennsylvania River of the Year. The Schuylkill received 43% of the popular vote among the 5 nominated rivers. They include the Schuylkill; Kiskiminetas-Conemaugh rivers in southwestern Pennsylvania; Ohio in the west; Brodhead Creek Watershed in the northeast; and West Branch of the Susquehanna in the north central section of the state. This is the second time the Schuylkill has been named River of the Year, the last time being in 1999. The Schuylkill River Greenway Association will receive a $10,000 Leadership Grant to help fund River of the Year activities. The association plans to incorporate River of the Year into existing programs such as the annual 7-day sojourn, but also new pedal/paddle events, and a bike tour series along the Schuylkill River Trail. For more information:

Gov. Chris Christie signed a bill today granting in-state tuition to immigrant students who lack legal status. The legislation extends the cheaper in-state tuition rates to students who were brought into the U.S. illegally as children, have attended at least three years of high school in the state and earned a high school or equivalency diploma, among other criteria. New Jersey joins at least a dozen other states that have similar laws. Around 6-percent of New Jersey's population is in the United States illegally.

Today's record low temperatures have been reeking havoc on motorists and their automobiles. Many around the area starting the morning with the dreaded sounds of cranking waiting for the car to turnover. Another problem once drivers were able to get going is unexpected low tire pressure due to the severe low temps. AAA said it was fielding up to 70% more calls compared to last week, mostly for batteries, towing, and tires.

Clear Skies, Temperature around 12 degrees this evening in Center City.
