Bobby Abreu Returns to Phillies, 14 Inches of Snow, Kenney Wants Pot Decriminalized

The Phillies have signed Bobby Abreu to a one year deal. Abreu turns 40 in March and hasn’t played in the majors since 2012. Last year Bobby played in the Venezuela league and hit .322 in 180 plate appearances. Abreu played for the Phillies from 1998 to 2006 and the Phils hope he can be the left handed bat off the bench they have been looking for.

The National Weather Service says 14 inches of snow was recorded in Philadelphia, close to 15 inches in Delaware and 7 inches in the Lehigh Valley. And the snow is going to be with us for some time. Temperatures are going to remain bitterly cold for at least the next 10 days. On Saturday it may warm up to the low 30’s and then we plunge back into the teens for several days.

City Councilman Jim Kenney wants pot decriminalized. He has called for Philadelphia to join the growing number of cities and states to decriminalize or legalize marijuana. Kenney will introduce a bill this week at Council’s first meeting of the year. Since DA Seth Williams 2010 decision to handle small possession amounts as summary offenses, Kenney says, “If the D.A. is not going to prosecute, there’s no reason to arrest.”

Sports
Tonight the 76ers are in New York to play the Knicks. St. Joe’s has Rhode Island. LaSalle is at St. Bonaventure.

Weather
Clear and cold today. 18 in Center City.
