Boyd Theater Rehab, PUC Conserve Message, Delaware River Oil Spill

A Florida based builder of high end movie theaters appears Tuesday at a Philadelphia Historical Commission hardship hearing to make its case for turning an old Art Deco movie palace on Chestnut Street into a high-end multi screen theater. The Boyd Theater's exterior is protected, but not its interior. iPic Theaters wants to demolish all but the Boyd's facade, making way for eight small theaters with drinking and dining options, contending that plan is the only way to make the project financially worthwhile. The Boyd's screen went dark in 2002.

As another mass of frigid air settles in, the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission is urging consumers to take conservation measures to ensure an adequate power supply and to soften the blow to your bank account. PUC spokeswoman Jennifer Kocher says folks can help by postponing the use of major appliances like clothes dryers until mid-day or after 9 p.m., sealing off unused rooms and lowering thermostats if possible. Conservation measures will not only help maintain the power grid but will also help soften the blow of heating bills.

The U.S. Coast Guard responded Monday to a crude oil spill in the Delaware River near Monroe Energy LLC in Marcus Hook, Delaware County. The Coast Guard says about 1,000 gallons of crude oil spilled into the river, about one mile south of the Commodore Barry Bridge. Boom is deployed to contain the oil while responders use skimmers and vacuums to remove the oil from the water.
