Philly Man Pled Guilty to Illegal Enrollment; Heating Oil Truck Stolen; No Action in Boyd Theater

Today, a Philadelphia man admitted that he illegally enrolled his daughter in a suburban Montgomery County school district. Hamlet Garcia had been charged with felony theft of services but plead guilty to a summery offense of the school code as part of a deal. If the case went to trial and he was convicted he could have faced 7 years in prison, now he just has to pay back $11,000 owed for tuition. Charges against Garcia's wife Olesia were dropped. The couple claimed that they had separated and Mrs. Garcia went to live with her father in Huntingdon Valley. They failed to notify Lower Moreland school district when the mother and daughter moved back to Philadelphia when the Garcia's reconciled.

A tanker truck filled with heating oil was stolen overnight in Philadelphia as we dip into another Arctic freeze around the area. The a blue Mama’s Boy Heating Oil company truck was stolen from 58th Street and Whitby Avenue in Southwest Philadelphia. The delivery truck was filled with 3,000 gallons of oil said owner Chris Thomas. It also had $3,000 in cash in a lockbox. It is only one of two trucks the company owns. If you see the truck you should notify police.

No action was taken today at a hearing regarding the fate of the historic Boyd Theater at 1910 Chestnut Street. A committee of the Philadelphia Historical Commission heard four hours of testimony but ran out of time before making a decision on whether or not to make a recommendation to the full commission. The debate pits current developer iPic Entertainment, that has plans to build a modern entertainment complex, against such preservationists as Friends of the Boyd, who wish to see the entire theater preserved and restored. The current plans only would save the outside facade and ticket windows but would destroy the insides.

Tonight,
Cloudy, chance of a snow, especially south and east, Temperature around 18 this evening in Center City.
