Power Outages Take Down iRadioPhilly and Hundreds of Thousands Lose Power, CVS Stops Selling Smokes

iRadioPhilly stations went off the air overnight in the massive ice storm related power outage that is crippling the region. Hundreds of thousands of people in the Philadelphia region woke up without power and hundreds of thousands more lost power through the morning as power lines and tree branches layered with ice and snow came down. PECO has said they expect today’s storm relate outages to break records. Many schools that had planned on delayed openings, decided against opening at all today.

Listeners have been checking in since early this morning with stories of power outages, down trees and ice covered roads. Sounding like gunshots, tree limbs snapped under the weight of ice and snow bringing down power lines and a report of a hot power line starting a tree on fire. This evening things will get worse in a re-freeze as temperatures fall into the teens.

CVS, the pharmacy and sometimes department store will stop selling cigarettes. President and CEO Larry Merlo made the announcement this morning, saying that ending the sale of cigarettes and tobacco products is the right thing to do to help people on their path to better health. The decision comes as CVS and other pharmacies re-tool themselves as integral parts of the health care system.

The 76ers host the Boston Celtics tonight. LaSalle is at UMass, #13 St. Louis visits St. Joe’s.
