Days Added to School Calendar, Roxy Theatre Opens Again, Hite Releases New Plan

The Philadelphia School District has announced changes to the remainder of the school calendar to make up for all of the snow cancellations this year. Three days originally planned for Spring recess, will now be in session. Schools will now be open April 15, 16 and 17. The projected last day of classes is June 19th. More changes are possible if there are more cancellations.

The Roxy Theatre is open again. After 12 months of renovation the Philadelphia landmark on Sansom Street, a two screen movie house is back in business. The renovation cost 3 or 4 times projections coming in at about $1 million. Half the money needed will be raised through fundraisers and the Roxy will be operated by the Philadelphia Film Society.

Philadelphia Schools Superintendent William R. Hite has released his plan to improve city schools. Action Plan 2.0 has four goals: Graduating all college ready, having 8 year olds reading on grade level, getting great principals and teachers, and receiving 100 percent of necessary funding. Hite will put a price tag on the plan later this week.

Medal standings at the Winter Olympics, the USA and Russia have 16, one less than leader, the Netherlands with 17.
