Snow Impacts Morning Commute, SEPTA Nearly Doubles Winter Budget, New Luxury Hotel

The latest winter storm that swept across the Philadelphia area last night and this morning left 2 to 3 inches of snow, which this winter, is little more than a nuisance. Philadelphia and Archdiocesan schools opened on time. Most of the others opened on time, some with delays. Many schools have already used up allotted snow days and don’t want to add any more makeup days later.

Snow event number 13 of this winter happened at a tough time for SEPTA leading into the morning commute. After a holiday weekend, SEPTA had to detour 25 bus routes to allow for cleanup but was able to keep on or close to schedule. SEPTA has nearly doubled its snow-clearing budget of between $4 million and $5 million this winter.

Logan Square will get another change. Kimpton Hotels will open a luxury hotel in the Family Court building at 1801 Vine Street. The conversion of the 73 year old building into a hotel will cost about $85 million and will include 199 rooms, a 3,500 square foot ballroom, meeting and board rooms, a spa and fitness center and a restaurant and bar.

Sports
Tonight the 76ers have the Cleveland Cavaliers, #9 Villanova is at Providence.

Weather
