Phillies Designate Pitcher JC Romero for assignment; Likely ending his Phillies days

Vance Worley is being called up to spot start on Saturday in Seattle. That was a fact everyone knew. What kind of roster move the Phillies were going to make to make room for him was unknown until after today's 3-0 win over Florida.

The Phillies have designated lefty J.C. Romero for assignment, effectively ending his stay in Philadelphia, as it's likely he'll be picked up off waivers by another club. Romero joined the Phillies midway through the 2007 season and had been a tremendous setup reliever for the club that year and in 2008. He was the pitcher of record in both game 3 and 5 of the '08 World Series capturing those wins.

He served a lengthy 50 game suspension in 2009 for testing positive for a banned substance, that he allegedly unknowingly took as it was an unlisted ingredient in an over-the-counter supplement from GNC.

Romero has always had control issues, but his ERA never was much affected his first years in Philly, but after '09 it has caught up with him. This year though he hasn't had much of a chance to get in games, only to pitch to left-handed hitters, and when he does he hasn't faired well (3.86 ERA, 16 hits, 12 walks, 16.1 innings). Our young pitchers, especially Bastardo (1.05 ERA), have proven to be a better option than the 35 year old Romero.

This very well may be the last we see of JC on the team (unless he somehow clears waivers and gets optioned to Lehigh) He just hasn't had the right stuff this year, but I will always remember the 2008 season. It was nice to have that automatic backend of the bullpen. You always knew when we had the lead... Romero>Madson>Lidge = Save = Win!
