A new survey by Harper Polling has York businessman Tom Wolf surging to the lead in the popularity polls in the Democratic race for governor. Wolf has run a heavy TV campaign across the state for the last month and now has 40 percent of the most likely voters, a significant lead over his closest rival, Allyson Schwartz who had 14 percent.

Philadelphia detectives are investigating reports of attempted child abduction near a North Philadelphia elementary school. On Monday, a man grabbed a young boy and girl near Mary Bethune Elementary at Old York Road and Germantown Avenue. The girl was able to break free and the boy got away when his friends pelted the would-be abductor with rocks. In a separate incident on Friday, a man grabbed a 10-year-old girl who kicked the man and got away.

UPDATE: 36-year-old Tyrone Ferguson turned himself in to police Wednesday morning. He is currently being charged with the Monday incident. Ferguson lives near Bethune Elementary. He has a previous arrest record for narcotics.

St. Joseph’s University has announced it will cut budgets across campus and plans to increase enrollment for next year’s freshman class. St. Joe’s faces an $8.7 million shortfall in revenue projections. Some of the 8,860 students and faculty are growing concerned about budget cuts and overpopulating classrooms.
