Masterman Student Charged, Hamilton Township Fire Casualty, Philadelphia Marijuana Law Change

Philadelphia Police say a male student at the Masterman High School in Spring Garden is expected to be criminally charged for allegedly posting a threat to a school administrator online. The student had previously been charged with trying to bring marijuana into the school and allegedly posted the threat after learning the discipline he would receive. In addition to criminal charges, the district also plans to offer the student “intervention” services, which could include substance abuse and mental health counseling.

The Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office says a 90-year-old man has died from his injuries after a house fire in Hamilton Township. The fire was reported around 5 p.m. Monday in the 1400 block of Arena Drive. The Prosecutor’s Office says two female residents, ages 64 and 27, along with a two-year-old were able to get out of the house.

With states and municipalities across the country decriminalizing and even legalizing marijuana, Philadelphia on Monday moved closer toward softening its own stance against marijuana. Top police and Nutter administration officials said in the hearing that they were "open" in most instances to ending arrests for possession of small amounts of marijuana, a policy change called for in legislation sponsored by Councilman James F. Kenney. He is proposing that offenders caught with less than an ounce of weed, like Fleming, should receive a court summons and be let go.
