Authorities say two people were seriously injured and a state trooper was also hurt in a three-vehicle accident on the Garden State Parkway in Stafford Township in Ocean County, shortly after the trooper had made a traffic stop. Sgt. Brian Polite says that another car traveling on the roadway struck the trooper's cruiser, which then hit the stopped car. The cruiser then caught fire, and the other two cars also were damaged from the fire. The trooper was treated at a hospital for minor injuries. The two more seriously injured victims were flown by helicopter to a hospital.

Mike Schmidt is recovering from an advanced form of skin cancer that kept him from being a guest instructor with the Philadelphia Phillies in spring training. Schmidt was in camp Sunday and publicly spoke for the first time about his illness — stage 3 melanoma, and the two operations, radiation and chemotherapy treatments that followed. Schmidt is scheduled for a scan Monday to see how far his recovery has progressed.

A customer who allegedly squirted nail polish remover into the eyes of employees at a southern New Jersey nail salon has been charged with aggravated assault and a weapons offense. Authorities say 29-year-old Hakera Cochran of Bridgeton was upset because one of her nails broke on Friday afternoon, shortly after she had a manicure at the city salon. Authorities say employees tried to calm the irate woman, but she eventually picked up a bottle of nail polish remover and squirted it in the faces of two employees, striking their eyes.
