Ellendale Train Crash, SEPTA Subway Gun Threat, NJ Beach Repair Tax Law

A 35-year-old man is hospitalized after a crash that involved a train and a car Monday afternoon at Main Street at Railroad Avenue in Ellendale, Delaware. A Subaru Impreza was driving eastbound on Main Street approaching the railroad tracks near Railroad Avenue. The driver failed to stop for the crossing signal and entered into the path of a southbound Norfolk Southern train with three engines and 22 cars attached. The train struck the Impreza on the driver’s side causing the vehicle to spin and come to a stop on the east side of the tracks.

Trouble on the tracks as a SEPTA police officer was attacked by a man threatening to have a gun Monday on the subway platform at Broad and Fairmount. The SEPTA police officer was attacked in front of a train full of passengers. Surveillance video shows SEPTA officer Ronald Jones pulled pepper spray and his baton but the suspect believed to be on drugs keeps coming. The two are rolling on the ground when passengers get off the train to help. Eventually backup arrived and the suspect was taken into custody.

A New Jersey Senate panel took a step Monday toward ensuring that state taxpayers whose money is used to repair beaches can actually use them. The Senate Environment and Energy Committee approved a bill requiring that beach repair projects that get state funding provide public access. The bill now goes to the full Senate for consideration. Gov. Chris Christie vetoed a similar bill passed by the previous legislature.
