Pa. Snow Day Relief Bill, Hatboro Man Arrested For Ricin Laced Birthday Card, Harvey Acquitted

The Pennsylvania Senate has passed a bill designed to give schools more flexibility in making up snow days from this brutal winter, but it's unclear whether it will get action in the state House. The bill, passed unanimously by the Senate, clarifies that schools can meet the minimum requirements for instruction by calculating hours instead of days. The bill would also allow schools to hold classes one Saturday a month to make up lost days. But the spokesman for the House majority leader says there is, for now, no plan to vote on the bill.

Police searched the Byberry Road home of 19-year-old Nicholas Helman of Hatboro, arrested Wednesday and charged with attempted murder for allegedly trying poisoning someone he was having problems with. Police say he put ricin in a scratch and sniff birthday card on March 6th, nearly two weeks ago, and placed it in the victim’s Olive Street mailbox in Warminster. Helman admitted to sending it and used castor beans and sodium hydroxide which he ordered on the internet to make the deadly substance.

A federal jury in Philadelphia has acquitted a former city police officer of violating a woman’s civil rights in an incident linked to a lewd act inside a drug house during a raid. Fired officer Joseph Harvey has been acquitted of a single count of deprivation of civil rights. A second officer, charged with lying as part of a cover-up, has also been found not guilty. The alleged victim testified Officer Joseph Harvey got her alone in a drug house, ordered her to strip, and then he masturbated. There was DNA and Harvey admitted on the stand during the trial that he did the lewd act, but he testified all the actions were consensual.
