Sneakers for City Homeless, Hatboro HAZMAT Issue, Wilmington Bad Odor,

Volunteers from New York, Philadelphia and the suburbs delivered something for the soles of the homeless on Thursday. Led by New York-based "It's from the Sole" as in the sole of a shoe, founder Andre McDonnell partnered with Whimsicle Popsicle’s Salim Weldon to collect and distribute sneakers for the homeless. Weldon says donations produced quite a bonanza. Students from Pine Forge Academy in Berks County traveled to Love Park in Center City to help sort the sneakers by size and put them up on tables for pick-up by the homeless.

HAZMAT crews were called out after reports of hazardous materials in the area. A small package was found under a gas main cover near Byberry Road and S. New Street. The package has been taken away. It’s unclear what was in the package. The District Attorney’s Office is leading the investigation. Byberry Road was shut down between Warminster Road and York Road.

UPDATE: Authorities returned to the area near the home of 19-year-old Nicholas Helman in Hatboro to look for possible evidence. Helman was arrested on Wednesday for attempting to poison a romantic rival with ricin. While the crews worked to locate the evidence residents were told to shelter in place. They located the potential toxic substance and there is no danger to the public.

According to New Castle police, the fire department and hazmat crews responded after receiving reports of a bad odor in Wilmington, Delaware. The call came in around 3:05 p.m. Thursday afternoon to an apartment building on the 1400 block of Delaware Avenue. It was determined that the odor was coming from a leak in the old refrigerant system in the building's basement. The leak was stopped and the building ventilated. It was all placed under control at 5:45 pm. There were no reported injuries.
