NJ Fire Rages On, Chestnut Street Renovation, PA Rated Worst Bridges in US

A forest fire continues to burn in Ocean County New Jersey, the fifth fire that has swept through the pine barrens in the last week. Yesterday, the uncontained fire forced hundreds to evacuate their homes. In all 621 homes were evacuated during the alert from five separate fires.

Up to $70 million will be pumped into a renovation of the 1100 block of Chestnut Street. Redevelopment leader Brickstone Company has permits in hand to close sidewalks and build a complex of loft-style apartments above towering, three story retail space. There is increasing demand among people who want to live and shop east of Broad Street in Center City.

A new report says Pennsylvania’s bridges are the worst in the country. The American Road and Transportation Builders Association says more than 5200 of PA’s 22,600 bridges – 23 percent – are rated structurally deficient under federal guidelines, meaning at least one aspect of the bridge is rated poor or unsafe. The bridges are not imminently dangerous, but need repairs.

Sports
Tonight, playoff game 4. The Rangers hold a 2-1 series lead over the Flyers. The Phillies are in Arizona with the Diamondbacks.

Weather
Mostly cloudy. 68 in Center City.
