Villanova Runner Sheila Reid Finalist for Honda-Broderick Cup

Tonight at Columbia University in New York, the honors for the Honda-Broderick Cup for the top female collegiate athlete of the year were handed out. It was only the first time all year that Villanova distance runner Sheila Reid did not take home the prize. UCONN's Maya Moore was handed the award tonight, whose Huskies went 150-4 in the time she played there, and was drafted #1 overall by the WNBA's Minnesota Lynx. This is the second year in a row she has won the award. The other finalist was Penn State volleyball player Blair Brown, member of 4 straight NCAA championship teams out in State College. All three women are certainly deserving of the honor, but would have received various levels of exposure to their careers.

As for our Villanova finalist, Reid certainly made her case this entire year. She lead the Wildcats to their second consecutive NCAA cross country team championship winning the individual title herself. She garnered the Honda Sports Award for cross country. At the NCAA indoor track championships she anchored the national championship distance medley relay and gained All-America honors in the 3000m. Most impressively was her rare double win at the NCAA outdoor track championships in both the 5000m and the 1500m. She was awarded the Honda Sports Award for track and field as well, becoming one of 3 women to ever receive 2 Honda awards in the same year.

Just to top it off, Sheila returned back home to Canada this past weekend, and won the 1500m at the Canada Championships held in Calgary. That will earn her a spot on the Canadian National team for the World Championships in Daegu, South Korea at the end of August.

Although she didn't quite win the big one at the end, it was still a very good year for Sheila. It is important to highlight these athletes that work so hard, but don't always get seen on ESPN, or even in front of fans for that matter, or will graduate into large contracts at a draft day. They really do love the sport and that's why they play, and sacrifice, and spend so much time. This award is also not just for athletic prowess, but also leadership abilities, academic excellence and eagerness to participate in community service. Something we should all strive for in our daily lives too.
