Thieves Rob and Operate Hess Station, Route 202 Accident, Minimum Wage Increase

Thieves took over a Philadelphia gas station, locked the attendant in the bathroom and sold gas to customers at a discount for three hours yesterday. It was the Hess station on Island Avenue near the airport. About 1 am three men, one wearing a Hess shirt, emptied the cash register, assaulted the attendant and took cash from customers. Police believe the same crew robbed a Hess on Passyunk last week.

Route 202 north was completely shut down this morning during the peak of rush hour when a tractor trailer wrecked and spilled fuel all over the heavily traveled road. The accident happened in a construction zone when the tractor-trailer jumped a concrete barrier. No one was seriously injured but traffic was a nightmare on all the alternate routes throughout the morning.

Philadelphia’s minimum wage is on the rise. Mayor Nutter circulated a memo to City Council that today he would sign an executive order raising the minimum wage required in City contracts and sub-contracts. The signing comes 2 weeks before the May 20 primary election which features a minimum wage ballot question.
