Curtis Institure Honors Eleanor Sokoloff, PA Supreme Court To Hear Lynn Case, PA Voter ID Law

The Curtis Institute of Music has honored a giant among the legends who’ve gone through the storied institution. She has spent more than three-quarters of her life there, and, she turns 100 next month. Eleanor Sokoloff entered Curtis as a teenaged student, then stayed as a teacher. She says through the generations of gifted students the standards have risen each time they have auditions, the quality is better than it was when she auditioned, and expressive music-making is the goal.

The Pennsylvania Supreme Court has announced it will hear the case of Monsignor William Lynn, whose conviction on felony child endangerment was overturned on appeal. Lynn was serving a three to six year sentence when the lower appeals court ruled he was wrongly convicted for his handling of sexual abuse complaints. The D.A. appealed that ruling. There is no schedule yet for arguments in the case.

The battle over Pennsylvania’s Voter ID law is apparently over for the rest of the year. After a Commonwealth Court judge decided not to reconsider his ruling against the Voter ID law, the Corbett administration has announced it will not appeal the case to the state Supreme Court. But Corbett spokesman Jay Pagni says the governor is not entirely giving up on the issue. He says Corbett believes matters raised by the court can be resolved legislatively.
