Concert Review: Broken Beak, Maitland and Alex G at Vinyl Revival 5/9/14

Friday, May 9th was another night of fine local live music at The Vault located in my favorite record store, Vinyl Revival in Landsdowne. It was a sell out and enthusiastic crowd of mostly loyal fans of the 3 bands.

First up was Broken Beak aka Beau Brynes. He performed 6 or 7 songs with a wide range from very quiet ballads to rockin' pieces about where the hell we are all going. I liked his quieter pieces the most especially 2 he did with no titles, both moody and smoky. They had really unique cords and talked to love lost and found, thoughts that drift to places we don't want them to do. Nice start and a fine performance by Beau, his guitar and his versatile voice.

Next up was a group that really spoke to me, Maitland. They are an indie folk rock group who harken back to the Beau Brummels, The Byrds and more recently The Smiths. The harmony is tight, the lead singer, Josh Hines, has a fine voice with range and presence. Jeff March, Adam Shumski, Alex Hines and Evan Moffett round out the group. With their enthusiasm and joy performing their music, they are fun to watch and hear. I also had the pleasure of listening to their self titled CD, Maitland. It is very good in terms of the songs and production value. They did 3 songs from their CD, “Dust Of The Leaves,” “Drop Down” as well as my favorite on the CD and their closing song “Embers. “ “Embers” has a lot of great rhythm and percussion changes, as well as, nice harmony and lyrics that tell the story of how fleeting life really is. Follow them on Facebook and buy their music on Bandcamp, they are a band to watch.

Alex G was the closing act. Unfortunately, I do not have the names of his band mates. That is unfortunately for they were just top-notch. The lead guitar player was exceptional, his fingers were on fire, the music exploded from his instrument. He just pushed the music. Alex G is a very creative guy who has multiple CDs available on Bandcamp. He has a wide range of musical and vocal styles. On this night he and his band performed 11 songs, starting with “Messages” a pumping guitar and a big bass. “Animals” followed, a intense tune about us folks the true animals. I personally liked “Rules” and the last song “Boy” the most. Strong vocals with Dickie Betts style guitar riffs combined with lyrics that speak to our impatience with societal norms. You can find Alex G under Sandy Alex G on Facebook and he has an extensive book of work to hear and buy on Bandcamp.

All three groups were impressive. You can catch them live by following them on Facebook, watch them on YouTube and buy their stuff on Bandcamp.
