On Tuesday night May 20th we were treated to a "Tuesday Afternoon" experience by the great Justin Hayward of Moody Blues fame at the World Cafe Wilmington. He was backed by an unbelievable guitar player, Mike Dawes, and Julie Ragins on keyboard/synthesizer and vocals. Both helped Justin make this performance extraordinary on every possible level. His voice, perfect strong truly memorable, his guitar work just a pleasure to see and hear, the backup music and vocals spot on, and the sound, mixing, and production of studio quality. What can I say, I am a gushing and unapologetic fan of The Moody Blues and Justin Hayward.

After the real nice warm up by Mike Dawes, Justin came out to a couple minute standing ovation by a sold out crowd of dire hard fans. You could tell by his face and his words that it was most appreciated. He said “not like British fans you Americans no lack of enthusiasm here.” He launched into his set that started with “Tuesday Afternoon.” This tour is in support of his latest solo effort, Spirits of the Western Sky. The album is both traditional Moody's fare as well as some real nice Nashville tunes. He did 5 or so from his new album and the rest the best of The Moody Blues and Blue Jays.

The set list was:
1. Tuesday Afternoon (MB)
2. It's Up To You (MB)
3. Lovely To See You (MB)
4. In Your Blue Eyes (JH)
5. The Western Sky (JH)
6. I Dreamed Last Night (BJ)
7. New Horizons (MB)
8. In The Beginning (JH)
9. One Day, Someday (JH)
10. The Eastern Sun (JH)
11. What You Resist Persists (JH)
12. Your Wildest Dreams (MB)
13. Forever Autumn (MB)
14. Question (MB)
15. Nights In White Satin (MB)

Encore:
16. I Know You're Out There Somewhere (MB)

The highlights of the night were, as you would expect, “Tuesday Afternoon,” “Lovely To See You Again,” Your Wildest Dreams,” "Nights In White Satin” and from the new album “What You Resist Persists,” and "One Day, Someday.” He spoke frequently about how he has changed his lifestyle from complicated, a mansion in England, to living in a flat in France. The themes of his songs are about his youth, his loves, triumphs, failures and the world now and the hereafter.

The audience gave him a standing ovation after almost each song. The pleasure he and we received from the concert was on all of our faces. He did not do a meet and greet, but once again my secret weapon, my wife, was in full glory. I brought my Blue Jays album and a magic maker, Janet approached the stage at the end of the encore and asked him to “Please sign it”. When he saw the Vinyl he broke into a big smile and singed the album and a couple of posters and tee shirts folks had purchased. He was so moved, he then started taking flowers, wrapped presents and other stuff folks brought for him. It was as near to a perfect night as it gets!!!!
