Barnes Museum Closes in Merion

The Barnes Museum on Latch's Lane in Merion hosted its final visitors last weekend. For the first time since 1922, the galleries of the Barnes Foundation will no longer be open to the public. For years, the Barnes Museum, on 12 acres in Lower Merion Township has been the center of debate. First there was a movement to relocate it, then when the move to Philadelphia became imminent, a movement to see it stay.

The collection of Impressionist and early Modern works was assembled by patent-medicine millionaire Dr. Albert C. Barnes.

To view the Renoirs, Van Goghs, Cézannes, and Matisses you'll have to wait until Spring 2012 when the paintings are expected to be on view roughly eight miles away in a museum under construction on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway in Philadelphia.
