Lewis Katz, a self-made man who built his fortune in New York parking lots, billboards and cable TV, and went on to buy the NBA's New Jersey Nets, NHL's New Jersey Devils and The Philadelphia Inquirer, died in a weekend plane crash. Katz died Saturday night in a Massachusetts crash that claimed six other lives. Katz grew up in working-class Camden, New Jersey, and worked as a lawyer before earning hundreds of millions of dollars investing in the Kinney Parking empire and the Yankees Entertainment and Sports Network in New York. He went on to become a major philanthropist in the Philadelphia region. Last week, Katz and Gerry Lenfest won ownership of the Philadelphia Inquirer, Daily News, and philly.com in a private auction over George Norcross last week for $88 million. Lewis Katz was 72.

Former Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell said Sunday that Philadelphia Inquirer co-owner Lewis Katz invited him on the doomed flight that crashed, killing seven. Rendell said Katz tried to persuade him Friday to attend an event at historian Doris Kearns Goodwin's Massachusetts home, but he had another commitment. Katz, a 72-year-old business mogul, and six others were returning home to New Jersey on Saturday night when the plane crashed on takeoff. The Longport, New Jersey Town Commissioner's wife Anne Leeds, Marcella Dalsey, president of the KATZ Academy Charter School and executive vice president of the Drew A. Katz foundation, and Susan Asbell, wife of former Camden County Prosecutor Sam Asbell were also passengers. The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating what may have caused the crash.

Police say three men were stabbed and a fourth hit in the head with brass knuckles in a bar fight in south Philadelphia over the weekend. Authorities said the fight broke out at about midnight Saturday at the Hoff Spot. Police said all of the victims were taken to Jefferson Hospital, where they were reported in stable condition.

The Archdiocese of Philadelphia announced the fates of 46 different parishes in Philadelphia, Montgomery, Delaware, and Bucks Counties. Some parishes will not under go any changes while many will merge with other nearby parishes. It was announced that 29 parishes will merge into 13 parishes starting July 1st. See the Archdiocese of Philadelphia's Press Release and Official List of Closures/Measures. This round of the Parish Area Pastoral Planning Commission's reviews started back in September and every aspect of parish life was looked at, “From sacramental activity, number of baptisms in a parish, number of funerals, number of marriages, looking at the number of registered parishoners, registered households. Looking at financial condition of parishes.” The Archdiocese serves some 1.5 million Catholics in the area.
