The co-owner of the Philadelphia Inquirer, Lewis Katz was killed with six others in a plane crash Saturday night in Massachusetts. His death comes just days after his successful buyout of the newspaper with partner Gerry Lenfest. The plane crashed during takeoff when it careened off the runway and burst into flames. Katz and the others on the plane were returning from an event at the home of Pulitzer Prize-winning historian Doris Kearns Goodwin.

A Chester police officer was shot early this morning outside the home where he was called for a domestic dispute. Officers arrived at the home on the 1200 block of Culhane where a man emerged with a gun and several shots were fire. The officer was struck in the abdomen and the gunman was hit several times when police returned fire. The officer was taken to Crozer Chester Medical Center.

The Archdiocese of Philadelphia announced over the weekend it would close 16 parishes, merging them with 13 neighboring parishes. The closures will leave the Archdiocese with 219 parishes. In 2010, when downsizing began, there were 266 parishes in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia. Membership at the closing parishes is down about 15% over the last decade.
