A class of new Philadelphia Police recruits celebrated their graduation from the Police Academy Wednesday. Philadelphia Police Commissioner Charles Ramsey's son was among the 47 new recruits to take the oath to protect and serve the citizens of the city. Commissioner Ramsey says his son, a Penn State graduate who had been working as a probation officer, finally decided to join the “family business.” The new Officer Ramsey said seeing what his father did as he was growing up had an impact.

The United States is warming fastest at two of its corners, in the Northeast and the Southwest. Northeastern states — led by Maine and Vermont — have gotten the hottest in the last 30 years in annual temperature. The Southwest warming, seems to be driven by dryness, because when there is little water the air and ground warm up faster. And in the Northeast, the temperatures are pushed up by milder winters and warm water in the North Atlantic.

A weapon that helped early Pennsylvania settlers survive and prosper is closer to being designated the state’s official firearm after a vote in the Legislature. The House voted 173 to 24 on Wednesday to send the bill to the Senate. The Pennsylvania long rifle was developed by gunsmiths in Christian’s Spring, near Nazareth, and by Martin Meylin in Lancaster County. Pennsylvania’s state beverage is milk, its animal is the whitetail deer and the mountain laurel is its official flower.

Weather, June 5

Rain ending this morning. Partly sunny this afternoon. High 74 in Center City.
