I-495 Dirt Pile, Shark Attack at Delaware Beach, Amtrak Trackside Wifi Plan

Crews have finished removing the huge pile of dirt from beneath the I-495 bridge, a possible cause of the tilting problem on the bridge over the Christina River around Wilmington. In the meantime, questions remain about when the bridge that has shifted 18 inches out of line, started to tilt. The bridge was inspected and passed just a few months ago.

A shark attack was reported at a Delaware beach yesterday. The incident happened at the beach in Cape Henlopen State Park between Cape May and Rehobeth Beach when a teenager was bitten in the arm while wading in about 4 feet of water. He was able to free himself and reported seeing the shark swim away. The teen was treated for cuts and gashes. Lifeguards and scientists will survey the waters to monitor for shark activity.

Amtrak would like to build a trackside Wifi network to offer true broadband to train travelers. Right now, service from cell towers along Amtrak routes is spotty at best. The new Wifi network would allow passengers to watch streaming video and download big presentations. Amtrak is taking bids now, but doesn’t expect the new Wifi network to be built for about 5 years.

Sports
The Phillies open a home series tonight with the San Diego Padres.

Weather
Isolated thunderstorms this afternoon. 86 in Center City.
