On Tuesday night, June 10th a couple of friends and I went to a free concert at Wellington Square Exton, Pa. There are a series of free concerts called Eagleview Summer Concerts on the Square. On this night, the reason I went was to see Treetop Flyers. They are a group form the U.K. They play a brand of Laural Canyon rock reminiscent of Poco, America, Pure Prairie League and a touch of The Eagles.

Caroline Rose was the warm up act. They are a trio named after the lead singer. She is a folk/country/blues singer who has a fine voice complimented by her expert lead guitar and harmonica work. I did not get the names of the guys playing the stand up bass and drums, my loss they were great and supplied tight harmony for Caroline.

I also did not get the name of an instrumental tune I wish I had for it was just stunning in it's interplay between her guitar the stand up bass and mandolin. A sound track form Deliverance with a bluesy overtone. “American Religious” is the title of a song as well as their album. The song is delivered in a Dylan type delivery and tempo, but with a strong country voice. A walk down the road to trying to find your place in this world. A song titled “ Blood On Your Boot Heels” was the closer. You can hear and almost see the nomadic lifestyle of a performer in this song, the endless goings and comings. She has a web page and a Facebook page and you can buy her music on www.bandcamp.com.

I heard the Treetop Flyers on the radio a couple of months back and got hooked on a song “Things Will Change” off the album The Mountain Moves. I bought the CD and have tried to catch them live. Well I did and was not disappointed. I had the opportunity to speak with Reid Morrison, lead singer and rhythm guitar, prior to the show. The name Treetop Flyers comes from the title of a Stephen Stills song of the same name. The band looks back into music, garbs the best of it and puts the fresh stamp of youth and exploration in their work. Your can hear the wonderful sound of Reid's Martin 28 guitar in their songs, its resonance and punchy volume harkens back to the likes of “Ventura Highway” by America.

There were about 500 or so in attendance. The interplay with the band was fun and a theme was their Britishness. All in good fun and appreciated on all sides. They performed 10 or so numbers, all very well done. I counted 4 standing ovations prior to the closing number. From their album they played 5/6 numbers. “Rose In The Yard” and “Things Will Change” are folk rock songs that would hold their own in any time period. The interplay between the 3 guitars has you riding down the country road and feel reminiscent of Poco, The Eagles and America.

The band is: Reid Morrison on guitar and lead vocals, Sam Beer on guitar and vocals, Toner Danan on drums and vocals, Laurie Sherman on guitar and mandolin and Aaron Griffths on bass. The songs off the albums sound even better live. They have a polished show performance and the production value this night allowed the unusual soulful voice of Reid to be crystal clear, balanced with the 2/3 part harmony they makes this band stand out.

“St Andrew's Cross “ was performed with Reid and I believe Sam Beer. It is a song about the death of Reid's father form cancer, a touching song of loss while celebrating love and just being there. Reid was choked up a couple of times during the song and when finished, the audience gave him one of the standing ovations. He is an engaging singer wearing his emotions on his sleeve. He emotes what he feels!

They closed with “Haunted House” which brings together the best of all this album has to offer. The upbeat pace, swirling guitars, the tight harmonies, Reid's pronounced voice all come together to make you want more. If you like Dawes ,Conor Oberst or the sounds of Laural Canyon, give them a listen, see them live, buys some tunes. I believe they are a band to watch, They have a web page www.treetopflyers.co.uk and are on Facebook.
