Burlington County Bear Seen, NJ Official State Candy, Cape May County Heroin Bust

Another bear sighting in Burlington County, in a tree in a Westampton Township backyard Wednesday night. Police are advising residents not to approach the animal. A bear was spotted wandering around another Burlington County town Tuesday morning. New Jersey State Game officials say because the fierce winter destroyed natural food, bears have had to forage in more distant areas looking for something to eat.

Salt water taffy is one step closer to becoming New Jersey’s official state candy. The Assembly approved a bill Monday that would honor it with the designation. It now heads to the state Senate. Assemblyman John Wisniewski had introduced the measure at the request of some fifth-graders from Sayreville’s Samsel Upper Elementary School. The soft taffy became popular as a souvenir in Atlantic City in the late 19th century. It does not contain any salt water.

A two month Cape May County narcotics investigation resulted in the seizure of $3.6 milllion worth of heroin and 12 people charged. Carlos Guzman and Hector Ramos were charged with Leader of a Narcotics Trafficking Network and Conspiracy to Distribute a Controlled Dangerous Substance. Authorities say so far, the equivalent of 182,000 bags of heroin with a street value of in excess of $3.6 million were confiscated. Guzman and Ramos face a mandatory penalty, if convicted, of life imprisonment.
