Cigarrette Tax, Nyashia Grant-Miller Missing, Philadelphia SRC Meeting

The Republican-controlled state Senate is poised to approve legislation allowing Philadelphia to help fund its public schools with a cigarette tax increase. Philadelphia officials say that imposing a $2 per-pack city excise tax on cigarette sales will provide $83 million for its schools. Without the money, they say the schools won’t be fit to open in the fall.

Police are asking for the public's help in finding a young Southwest Philadelphia girl who’s been missing since early Saturday morning. Police say 11-year-old Nyashia Grant-Miller left her home in the 5300 block of Florence Avenue around 1 a.m. Saturday after arguing with a family member. Around 3 p.m. Sunday, a relative saw Nyashia at Christy Park at 55th and Christian, but the girl ran off. Nyashia is African American, 5 feet, 1 inch tall, around 117 pounds, with brown eyes and short braided brown hair. She was dressed in a black tank top and shorts. Anyone with information on the girl’s whereabouts is asked to call Southwest Detectives, or 911.

The Philadelphia School District is keeping its pink slips in its pocket for now, until the revenue picture from Harrisburg becomes more clear. The School Reform Commission Monday night unanimously adopted a $2.5 billion budget that contains a $93 million placeholder. Those cuts could include the layoffs of 1,300 staffers. But Hite says the pink slips are on hold so the district doesn’t spend millions in severance costs only to recall workers if revenue comes through.

Weather, July 1

Mix of clouds and sun. High 94 in Center City.
