Three Atlantic City-area lawmakers want state casino regulators to force the Showboat and Trump Plaza casinos to remain open at least four more months to let prospective buyers kick the tires. Both of the casinos recently sent out letters to their employees warning them their jobs are expected to end within two months. The Showboat is due to close Aug. 31, Trump Plaza two weeks after that. Atlantic City, the nation’s third-biggest casino market after Nevada and Pennsylvania, began the year with 12 casinos, but by fall it could have only eight.

The Pennsylvania SPCA is offering a $500 dollar reward in a case of animal cruelty. Officials say they rescued a dog, tied to a chain link fence, and on the verge of a “slow and painful death” Tuesday morning. George Bengal with the PSPCA, says they got a tip that an adult female brown and white dog was tied to a fence near the Awbury Rec Center at Haines and Ardleigh Streets in East Germantown. The dog is expected to recover and is being treated.

Two children were rescued from the Delaware River by Philadelphia Police and Port Authority officers Tuesday night. It happened at the 6400 block of New State Road under the Tacony-Palmyra Bridge. A 10-year-old boy slipped and fell into the Delaware River. According to police, an 11-year-old boy jumped in to help him. Both children held onto the wall near the bridge. Philadelphia Police dropped life preservers and pulled the boys out of the river.

Weather, July 23

Hot and humid, isolated afternoon thunderstorms. High 94 in Center City.
