Philadelphia Folk Festival 2014 Preview

  by: BArmstrong - Philadelphia, PA
started: 07/31/14 8:16 pm | updated: 07/31/14 8:16 pm

This year's edition of the Philadelphia Folk Festival, the 53rd, continues the event's run as the longest continuously running annual Folk Festival in North America again at The Old Poole Farm near Schwenksville PA. And again this year iradiophilly in partnership with the Philadelphia Folksong Society will broadcast the performances from the Main Stage. In between sets there will be as many artist visits and interviews as we can wrangle.

The line-up for 2014 is as eclectic as ever. There is more bluegrass than usual as Old Crow Medicine Show (Friday Night), The Gibson Brothers (Saturday) and The Steep Canyon Rangers (Sunday) all flash sharp chops and terrific songs. Shemekia Copeland on Friday and Tommy Emmanuel as well as Rebirth Brass Band Saturday night will summon up blues and funk. Janis Ian and Steve Poltz Saturday, the curmudgeonly winsome Loudon Wainwright III Sunday and John Flynn Friday together represent a diverse array of excellent songsmiths.

Archie Fisher, appearing Friday night, is a beloved veteran of Scotland’s folk music. Natalie MacMaster describes her latest album Cape Breton Girl as a "straight-ahead, traditional record" so best guess is her Saturday set will reflect that as it features her rousing fiddling. San Francisco based Tempest brings thrilling folk rock weaving many textures. They continue the tradition of Fairport Convention.

Jason Isbell, former Drive-By Trucker who has carved a vibrant path of his own (hopefully with his wife Amanda Shires, herself a charismatic fiddler and singer songwriter, in the band) and Sarah Jarosz, at 22 a recent alumna of the New England Conservatory of Music and with already three thrilling albums to her credit, both making PFF debuts will both be on Sunday night.

And there's lots more. Music begins on several smaller stages and the Cultural Tent at 1 PM Friday and 11 AM Saturday and Sunday. Come on out and partake in the music as well as the renowned crafts on display and for sale as well as the ever more varied food available.

And if you can't be there once again this year, we'll be broadcasting all of the musical performances from the main stage right here on iradiophilly.com! For more information visit the Broadcast Page.
