Archbishop Charles J. Chaput of Denver to lead Philadelphia Archdiocese

The Archdiocese of Philadelphia with it's 1.5 million Catholics will receive a new pastoral leader this year. It was long anticipated that Cardinal Justin Rigali would be replaced as Archbishop after submitting his official retirement papers last year. All bishops are required to retire at age 75, Rigali turned 75 in April '10.

It was announced today that Pope Benedict XVI has chosen Archbishop Charles J. Chaput (sha-pew) of Denver to replace Rigali here in Philadelphia. He will be installed on September 8th at the Cathedral.

Chaput, 66, was born in Kansas to a Native American mother and a French Canadian father. He was ordained in 1970 as a Franciscan priest of the Capuchin order, and became a bishop at age 43. He previously served as bishop of Rapid City, SD, before becoming Archbishop of Denver in 1997.

His style is strong, out-spoken, and straight forward, a contrast to the soft piety of Rigali. Chaput is also well published and opinionated, highly conservative, strongly Catholic on issues both moral and political. We'll see a much different type of leader than previous archbishops.

Cardinal Rigali will remain in active role until September 8th, when Chaput is installed as Archbishop. Rigali plans to retire to Knoxville, TN. However, he still spends a fair amount of time in Rome as well.
