The body of a woman was found this morning in Pennypack Park in Northeast Philadelphia. The woman, identified as 46-year-old Connie McClain-Murray, was discovered just after 6 a.m. by a cemetery worker near the Crispin Rec Center at Holme and Convent avenues in the Holme Circle section. There apparently are no obvious signs of trauma but city detectives are investigating the case as a possible homicide. The cause of death is unknown pending an autopsy. McClain-Murray May have been in the park jogging when she was strangled.

Chaka Fattah Jr., son of US representative Chaka Fattah (D-Pa.), has been indicted for bank fraud, income tax invasion and theft for activities between 2005 and 2012. He turned himself into federal authorities this morning at the courthouse. He is accused of lying about his income to obtain hundreds of thousands in business loans that he used to pay personal debts and expenses including car payments, jewelry, clothing, electronics, utilities, and gambling debts. He is also charged with filing false income tax returns on numerous occasions during that period. Fattah Jr. is also accused of stealing federal funds from the Philadelphia School District. If convicted he faces jail time, up to $13 million in fines, and restitution to the IRS. He was released on bail pending his next hearing. Congressman Fattah released this statement:

“Assistant United States Attorney Paul L. Gray and FBI Special Agent Richard J. Haag and their involvement in the charging of my son raise concerns about the fair administration of justice in this case. With these charges we have now moved from speculation to specific allegations. This will bring the matter closer to a day in which my son can defend himself in court and I am confident the facts will clear his name. I have full confidence in my son; I love him and stand by him today and every day.”

An Upper Darby mother of two was found strangled to death inside her home Sunday morning after officers stopped by to perform a well-being check. 38-year-old Masako Griffin was supposed to meet family on Friday night. When she did not arrive or call they contacted the authorities. She was found lying in a second floor bedroom in her home on the 7000 block of Emerson Avenue in Upper Darby. Police are looking for her boyfriend who is considered a person of interest at this point. The police have responded to this house in past for reports of domestic violence between the two. Griffin has a 1-year-old daughter (with her current boyfriend) and an adult son.
