Pennypark Park Woman Strangled; Robber Wears Pink Hat/Glasses (video); $265M For Philly Schools

Philadelphia Police have confirmed that a mother of two discovered yesterday in Pennypark Park in the Northeast was strangled. The Medical Examiner ruled her death a homicide by strangulation this afternoon after performing an autopsy. There were no signs of sexual assault. The body of 46-year-old Connie McClain-Murray was found at around 6 a.m. Tuesday near the Crispin Recreation Center at Convent and Holme Aves. by a woman walking her dog. She did not have a cell phone and waved down an off-duty SEPTA driver who called 911. McClain-Murray went out for a walk/jog at 9 p.m. Monday from her home on the 2800 block of Tolbut Street in the Holme Circle neighborhood but never returned. Her family notified police when they could not find her. Police do not have a motive and are still searching for clues in the area she was found. If anyone has information they are urged to contact police.

Police are on the lookout for a robbery suspect wanted for two separate incidents over the weekend in Torresdale. The man, who was wearing a pink hat and sunglasses, robbed one convenience store and tried to rob another in the early morning hours of Sunday, August 3rd. At 2:40 a.m. the suspect entered the 7-Eleven store at 9901 Frankford Avenue armed with a knife. He demanded money from the clerk at the counter but fled the store without taking anything. Forty minutes later the same suspect entered the Wawa at 9456 State Road. This time the clerk handed over cash and the suspect fled north on State Road. The suspect is decribed as a white male, 5’6”, 140 pounds, wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt, tan pants, gray shoes, a black mask and the pink hat and pink glasses. He was caught on surveillance video at both locations.

Governor Tom Corbett was in Philadelphia today to announce that the state would advance the School District of Philadelphia $265 million, however Superintendent William Hite said the money would not necessarily guarantee schools opening on time in September. The district was counting on the passing of a $2-per-pack tax on cigarettes in the City of Philadelphia to bring in new money, however state legislature canceled a vote before session broke for summer citing lack of consensus. Corbett has been encouraging the Pennsylvania legislature to come back to vote on the cigarette measure. He also hopes the teacher's union will make concessions to help balance the district's budget. Currently, there is a $81 million short fall in the budget and Hite does not want to resort to a late start, layoffs, or other cutbacks. The $265 million released today is money the school district would have already received throughout the year.
