Taney Wins First LLWS Game 4-0; Philly Schools Opening on Time; No Cause in Gesner Fire

Philadelphia's Taney Dragons won their Opening Round game of the Little League World Series Friday afternoon 4 – 0 over the Southeast Regional team from Nashville. Star pitcher Mo'ne Davis pitched the complete game shutout with 8 strikeouts and gave up only 2 hits. The team jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first with a three-run homerun by Jared Sprague-Lott. The team will play again on Sunday at 7PM on ESPN2.

On Friday morning, School Superintendent William Hite announced that Philadelphia Schools will open on time September 8th without layoffs, but $32 million in services will cut in order to do it. The SRC hopes the cuts are temporary and could be restored if new funding sources come through like the $2-per-pack cigarette tax now waiting in legislature. The school district was advanced $265 million by Goveror Corbet, but that money was already budgeted for and did not factor into their decision. There is still an $81 million shortfall in this year's budget. The temporary cuts include:

- High school students who live within two miles of their school would not receive transportation. That impacts some 7,500 students at district, charter and non-public schools.

- 300 students will be impacted in the Multiple Pathways to Graduation Program, which results in "fewer high quality options for students," Hite said.

- Elimination of preparation and professional development before school opening for teachers at some of most challenged schools, the Promise Academies

- Schools will be cleaned less frequently

- The school district will leave school police officer vacancies unfilled

- There will be additional departmental staffing reductions.

A wake was held Friday evening for the four children killed in the fire on Gesner St. in Southwest Philadelphia in July. There were four small caskets in the front of Diving Mercy Parish in Southwest Philadelphia for 4-year-old twins Marie and Maria Boawah, 4-year-old Patrick Sanyeah, and 1-month-old Taj Jacque. Their funeral will be today. Fire broke out a porch on 6500 of Gesner St. around 3AM on July 5th. The fire quickly spread between the rowhomes, damaging or detroying 13 houses and injuring 5 others. The Liberian community in the neighborhood had called the fire department's response time into question at the time of the fire, a response time that the department defended with dispatch logs. Friday afternoon Fire Commissioner Derrick J.V. Sawyer released a statement saying the caused of the fire cannot be determined. He said, "extensive damage to the initial area of fire destroyed the physical evidence required to determine the exact cause of this fire." If any new information comes forward the investigation will continue.
