There shouldn't be any doubt that Philadelphia is one of the great cultural centers in our country and even the world. From our renowned art museums to our live theater; to the city's colorful settings on tv and film and our rich history and influence in music. The Sound of Philadelphia, Hall and Oates, Will Smith, American Bandstand, The Roots, Live Aid/8. They scream Philly. And there are many many more individual artists who may have come from here but didn't make it here.

In the past year or two, I've sent off quite a few amazing artists to New York, Nashville and Los Angeles to take the next steps on their musical journey. I want them to have a reason to stay here. The Philly music scene is healthy and growing and doing so organically, constantly adapting, but anything that brings everyone together to collaborate can only turn out something better.

Councilman-at-large David Oh, Chairman of the Committee on Global Opportunities and the Creative/Innovative Economy, recognized an opportunity to engage the music scene and help promote up-and-coming artists and the creative economy. On August 8th he announced a new project at a press conference at City Hall along with industry leaders. PHL Live Center Stage will be a music festival/competition open to Philadelphia area musicians/bands of all genres (specifically classical, country/folk, hip-hop/rap, jazz, world, pop/dance, R&B, rock, gospel and DJ). Artists/bands from Philadelphia and the surrounding counties can register and submit their information to the PHL Live website (http://phllive.org) from now until September 30th. You do have to be 18+.

After the submission deadline, judges in each genre category will pick up to 5 finalists in that category for the showcase round. The showcases will be held at prominent venues around the city from October 28th – November 10th. Those venues are World Cafe Live (Country/Folk), Milkboy (Rock), Silk City (Pop/Dance), Time (Jazz), Underground Arts (Hip-hop), Hard Rock Cafe (World), Relish Philadelphia (R&B), Silk City (DJ), Enon Tabernacle Baptist Church (Gospel) and St. Paul's Episcopal Church (Classical). The judges will evaluate the performances at the showcases. Fans can also download and use the the Decibly app to vote for a 'People's Choice'.

All of the category judges' winners and People's Choice winners will be announced at the PHL LIVE Center Stage Award Show at the Trocadero to be held in December. There will be performances by a variety of the finalists at the Awards Show. Prizes for the winner's will include recording time and cash.

There is so much talent in the Philadelphia area there is no doubt that the winners will be excellent. Hopefully there are quite a few extraordinary talents discovered that haven't had enough exposure before. This project is already bringing people from all corners of the city's music community together to create something special.
