A Philadelphia police officer is recovering from a bullet wound to the head today after a shootout overnight in the Tacony section that left the suspect dead. Police responded to a call on the 6400 block of Ditman Street for a heavy set man with a gun. As soon as police arrived, he opened fire on them. Police returned fire killing him. The wounded officer was treated and released from Albert Einstein Medical Center.

SEPTA has launched a crackdown on fare jumpers who ride subways and trains every day without paying. New security cameras and a communication system is being used to identify and fine people who ride without paying. The fine for jumping the $2.25 fare is $300. In 2011, 416 fare jumpers were fined. In the first six months of this year, 2,300 summons have been issued thanks to the improved program.

One of entertainments most familiar voices, Don Pardo has died. (clip) For years Pardo was the voice of Saturday Night Live. On NBC-TV in 1963, Pardo broke the news about the JFK shooting. (clip) Pardo was also the voice of The Price Is Right, Jackpot and Jeopardy. Don Pardo was 96.
