A boy who had filed a lawsuit over getting kicked off his high school girls’ field hockey team has dropped his suit. Joshua Schwartz had been playing on the Quakertown Community High School team, but 2 weeks ago the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association ruled boys are not allowed to play on girls’ teams. He dropped his threatened suit because the distraction was becoming too much for his teammates who are bound for the playoffs. Just yesterday, three of the team’s coaches resigned without explanation.

Temple University has released a plan to expand security patrols to ensure the safety of its students. More than 450 police and security officers protect the campus of 13,000 students. As the university’s off campus housing population has grown, concerns after an attack on a female student in the Spring, expedited the plan to expand the security footprint.

The second American journalist beheaded by a masked Islamic State militant in Syria was the son of a Philadelphia man. Steven Joel Sotloff was the son of Arthur Sotloff, a 1965 graduate of Overbrook High School. In the 1970’s Sotloff moved to Florida where he raised his family. Proud of his son, Arthur Sotloff understood the dangers his son faced, but admired his desire to give a voice to the voiceless.
