Manhunt Closes Pocono Schools, PA Welfare Name Change, Banana Used as East Parkside Robbery Weapon

Authorities say a heavily armed survivalist with a vendetta against law enforcement is the suspect in an ambush that killed one Pennsylvania State Police trooper and wounded another in a heavily forested region of northeastern Pennsylvania. All Pocono Mountain School District schools will be closed on Thursday due to ongoing safety concerns for all of the students with an armed and dangerous man still on the loose in the area. Administration made this decision after a careful review of the most current information available on this situation. State police have warned the public that 31-year-old Eric Frein of Canadensis is dangerous, saying he’s talked about committing mass murder.

Governor Tom Corbett is expected to sign a bill on the way to his desk that will change the name of the state Department of Public Welfare. The new name for the Pennsylvania Department of Public Welfare will be the Department of Human Services. The sponsor of the bill making the change, sent to the Governor Wednesday by the House, is Representative Thomas Murt, a Montgomery County Republican. The name change would take effect 60 days after being signed into law but Murt says to save money, the new Department of Human Services would continue to use existing supplies of stationary and other materials that say "Department of Public Welfare" until they are depleted.

Philadelphia Police are asking for the public’s help in identifying a suspect who allegedly used a banana to rob a market in Philadelphia’s East Parkside neighborhood. The incident, caught on surveillance video, happened Tuesday at Tejada Grocery on the 3800 block of Poplar Street. Police say it was determined that the suspect allegedly picked up a banana from the counter and placed it inside his sweatshirt, simulating it as a weapon. He demanded money and cigarettes and made off on a bike. The suspect is described as a Black male, 5' 9"-5' 11", 140 pounds, with a thin build. He was wearing a tan hooded sweatshirt with "Pacific Coast Hollister 19" on the front in red lettering and black pants.
