Puerto Rican Day Parade Warnings, PA Gubernatorial Debate, Delaware Students Robbed

With Philadelphia's Puerto Rican Day parade and festival less than a week away, Deputy Commissioner Kevin Bethel says he wants to put parade and festival goers on notice that bad behavior won’t be tolerated in any part of the city. He especially pointed to two, alcohol-free, after-parade celebration areas which are being set up Sunday, September 28 at Fairhill Park and Lighthouse Field saying if anyone comes through the thing with an ATV or a dirt bike, they will be taking them. Bethel also warned that hanging out of moving cars, spinning and screeching tires, and occupying intersections in unauthorized celebrations will also bring a firm police response.

Pennsylvania’s gubernatorial candidates’ first debate is tonight. Republican Governor Tom Corbett and Democratic challenger Tom Wolf are to square off at a Pennsylvania Chamber of Commerce and Industry dinner in Hershey. This is the first of three events agreed to by the candidates. The others will be on Oct. 1 in Philadelphia and Oct. 8 in Pittsburgh.

Police in Newark say a pair of University of Delaware students were robbed at gunpoint on campus last Saturday night. The two students were walking on South College Avenue near Winslow Road around 7:30 p.m. when the suspect approached them and pulled out a black handgun. He then took both students’ cell phones, and ran away down Winslow Road. Police say there is no surveillance video available, but the victims described the suspect as being a black male between 20 and 25-years-old, about 5’8″ tall with a muscular build. He had short, black hair and a goatee, and was wearing a light-colored T-shirt and jeans.
