'Blood Moon' at Sunrise on Wednesday; Lunar Eclipse at Dawn in Philadelphia

Set your alarms early on Wednesday if you want to catch a rare 'blood moon' lunar eclipse just before dawn. The moon will appear to have a dark reddish hue due to the small amount of sunlight that bends around the Earth's atmosphere like a sunset. Earth's shadow will begin to pass over the full moon at 4:15 a.m. It will cover the moon at 6:15 a.m. and last for 59 minutes. However, the moon will set before the entire eclipse is complete. Moonset is 7:09 a.m. and sunrise is 7:04 a.m.

The showers and clouds tonight should move out and clear dup by the morning. The best place to view the eclipse in Philadelphia is in any open space with a clear view of the southwest sky. The moon will be low in the sky as it is setting so make sure there are no trees or buildings to block your view. Unlike a solar eclipse, it is perfectly safe to view the moon with your eyes or binoculars

The Draconid meteor shower is also peaking tonight. This annual fall shower does not usually have as many meteors as others and with the full moon (and cloud cover) for most of the night they may be hard to spot. However, when the ecplise starts to darken the moon, don't be surprised to see a shooting star or two. This shower emanates from the constellation Draco the Dragon, in the north-northwest sky.
