She is the youngest person to receive Philadelphia's Liberty Medal and the Nobel. Yesterday, 17 year old Nobel Peace Prize winner, Malala Yousafzai (pictured-Inquirer), the girl who stood up against the Taliban, received the Liberty Medal at the National Constitution Center. She began her activism 6 years ago by writing about living under the Taliban rule. A Taliban gunman shot her in the head while she was returning from school because of her support for gender equality and education for girls in 2012. She survived the assassination attempt and recovered in Britain, where she lives now.

Pennsylvania funding totaling over $400,000 has been approved for restoration projects in Delaware County. The money from the Commonwealth Financing Authority will help Edgmont Township build its first municipal park and trail system. Chadds Ford Township will build a trail network among historic properties. And Upper Chichester will restore an eroded bank on a branch of Naamans Creek.

Governor Tom Corbett was in Philadelphia yesterday to sign a bill into law that aims to stop former offenders from causing victims mental anguish. Convicted cop-killer, Mumia Abu Jamal is serving a life sentence and has released several books claiming his innocence and recently gave a college commencement speech from prison. The bill is not focused on one killer, but is intended to protect the rights of all victims’ families.
