Concert Review/Setlist: Todd Rundgren at the Keswick Theatre 10/29/2014

The Wizard himself was at the Keswick Theater on Wednesday night as Todd Rundgren cast his spell on his home town audience. Unlike Merlin, who used his wand, Todd used his distinct voice and musical skills to mesmerize his subjects. The sold-out crowd responded to all of his stuff including, covers like "Running Bear," "Endless Prairie" and "Fire." He pulled off these very different songs with humor and for "Fire" with overwhelming power.

Todd Rundgren "An Unpredictable Evening Tour" is a perfect description of the night. He just picks songs and the band and he let it go. He does not take requests and joked with the crowd when they called out songs to do. "Hey, when you call out I forget what I was about to, age you know."

The band consisted of lead and bass guitarists, drums and Todd on guitar and piano. His songs can be complex and they did well even without a synthesizer. This crowd of Todd enthusiasts were both knowledgeable and appreciative. The Nazz songs, as you would expect, received the most response. Folks sang along, swayed and gave standing ovations after “It Wouldn't Have Made Any Difference” and “Hello It's Me.” From Something/Anything he did a magnificent rendition of “I Saw The Light,” just another home run in a concert of extra base hits. His voice was right on the mark, the harmony just enough, the moment a step back to 1971/1972.

From his Utopia days he chipped in “Lysistarta” and closed with “One World.” We chipped in enthusiasm for his music. He performed a tongue-in-cheek rendition of “Muskrat Love” the Captain and Tennell and America hit. We received a brief biology class on muskrats along with a discussion of how silly words and concepts can and do end up hit songs. It sure was a tangent but, a very funny one. The show was random. He just picked songs like “Are You Havin' Fun Yet” (Tony Bennett) did it well and had us liking it. The mix of serious and silly was just right. He has been around long enough and has the fan base loyal enough that he can entertain his our peccadilloes, and he knows we'll love it!

SETLIST:
“Tra La La Song”
“Love Of The Common Man”
“Running Bear”
“I Don't Want To Tie You Down”
“Black and White”
“It Wouldn't Have Made Any Difference”
“Are You Havin' Fun Yet”
“Muskrat Love”
“I Saw The Light”
“Fire”
“Compassion”
“Song of the Viking”
“Born to Synthesize”
“Endless Prairie”
“Hello It's Me”
“Lysistrata”

Encore:
“Past”
“One World”

After “Lysistrata,” Todd and the band left for the encore call. Todd returned to do “Past” and the band and he closed with “One World.” A fitting close for a world traveler who has influenced music and culture ever since the sixties and Woody's Truck Stop.

He is The Wizard. Not only has he written and played great music with Woody's Truck Stop, Nazz, Utopia and as a solo artist; he has produced a broad array of rock superstars. The Band, Hall & Oates, Bad Finger, Grand Funk Railroad, XTC, Cheap Trick and Patti Smith have benefited form his vision and technical skills.
