Signs Ban Hoodies; Reward Raised in Germantown Abduction; Charter School Sued

There is growing controversy over bright red signs in the windows of some Philadelphia retail stores that say "Do Not Enter with Mask or Hoodie" (pictured). The signs are an attempt to curtail robberies. However, opponents say they are a form of racial profiling. The signs were introduced by a Mount Airy-based businessman who started to sell them two years ago to help stem the tide of holdups.

The reward is now $47,000 for the arrest and conviction of the person who abducted Carlesha Freeland-Gaither. The 22 year old Gaither was forced into a car Sunday night in Germantown. Surveillance video shows her struggling to escape and she kicked out the back window of the car that took her away. Her ATM card was used in Maryland and more video became available giving the police and family clues to the identity of her abductor.

A struggling charter school in Philadelphia is now being sued. Imhotep Institute Charter High School in East Germantown, once dubbed “the Miracle on 21st Street” is fighting to keep its charter after a lawsuit was filed by Sankofa Network, a related non-profit that owns Imhotep’s campus. Sankofa claims Imhotep owes $1.2 million in rent, interest, and fees.
