A group of local residents protested the possibility that a second casino might be built in the stadium complex in South Philly. The site considered is the Holiday Inn near Citizen’s Bank Park. Residents are concerned that a casino with gambling near homes and schools is not a good idea. Casino advocates say a casino will bring jobs.

Police are investigating the death of a 62-year-old woman found naked and bruised inside a West Philadelphia home. Her 57-year-old roommate told police they'd both been attacked by three masked men who broke in around 3 o’clock Thursday morning. There was no sign of forced entry and nothing disrupted inside the home. Neighbors say they did not hear any cries for help. The roommate is being treated at a hospital with bruises and other minor injuries.

Uber, the controversial ride-sharing service, got approval Thursday to operate in most of Pennsylvania, but not in Philadelphia. The PUC, which regulates taxi and limousine service in every county except Philly decided that Uber can operate statewide for two years, if it meets requirements for insurance, driver background checks, and financial reporting. However, it does not apply to Philadelphia, where the Parking Authority regulates taxi service. The PPA has been aggressively opposing UberX service, in which riders electronically summon private drivers in their personal cars.
