Philly Prepares For Ferguson Decision; Kerns Pleads No Contest; 4-year-old Dies in Feltonville Fire

UPDATE 9:25 p.m.: A grand jury in Ferguson, MO, in Saint Louis County has decided NOT to indict Police officer Darren Wilson for the shooting of Michael Brown after careful consideration of all evidence presented. Numerous groups of protestors took to the streets of Philadelphia, marching throughout Center City streets for hours in reaction to the announcement. Protestors in Ferguson quickly turned to violence, throwing rocks and bottles, lighting cars and businesses on fire, shooting off guns, and looting numerous businesses.

The grand jury in Ferguson, MO, has reached a decision regarding the possible indictment of police officer Darren Wilson in the Aug. 9 fatal shooting of Michael Brown. They have yet to announce their decision; it is expected at 9 p.m. EST. Here in Philadelphia, Police Commissioner Charles H. Ramsey has officers standing by awaiting what he expects to be peaceful protests, no matter the outcome of the grand jury. Officers began gathering near Love Park and City Hall late this afternoon and were also planning for a possible march from City Hall to the Federal Building. Ramsey does not expect to see destruction of property or injury to people, and hopes that if people do exercise their constitutional right to protest that they will be peaceful and nonviolent.

The former head of the Montgomery County GOP plead no contest today to sex related crimes stemming from an incident in October 2013. 66-year-old Robert Kerns plead no contest to indecent assault and was sentenced to 2 years probation and must register as a sex offender for 15 years. Kerns was accused of sexually assaulting a female paralegal, who worked at his law firm, in his car and at her home while giving her a ride home from a party where they had been drinking. The victim believed she was drugged, as did Montgomery County authorities. MontCo District Attorney Risa Ferman had to drop the case after they realized they misread a toxicology report and there was actually no drug present. The state refiled charges against Kerns in April. The victim is satisfied with today's resolution and encourages all victims to come forward.
