Former Phillie Jim Thome hits 600th Career Home Run

Former Phillie ('03-'05) Jim Thome, 40, now playing for the Minnesota Twins, became only the 8th player to have hit 600 home runs for their career. That came tonight after hitting a 3 run shot to left field off Daniel Schiereth in the 7th inning at Comerica Park in Detroit. Despite giving the Twins the 9-5 lead, Tigers fans cheered him as he rounded the bases on this monumental occasion. Thome had hit #599 on his previous at bat in the 6th inning, that was a two-run shot.

"It's an unbelievable night, obviously," Thome said. "It's something you never dream of doing. You dream about it, but when it finally happens it's kind of surreal."

While Thome played for the Phillies he launched 96 HR's. He hit his 400th homerun on June 14, 2004 at Citizen's Bank Park in it's inaugural year while in the Phil's uniform. The majority of his HRs (334) came with the Cleveland Indians, the team he came up with in 1991. The Phillies traded Thome to the Whitesox after the '05 season for Aaron Rowand and to make room for a rookie named Howard to play first.

If there is one thing that anyone around baseball can agree with, from the owners, to the players, to the fans, to the media, and anywhere around the game is that this accomplishment couldn't have been earned by a nicer, more deserving player than Thome. I don't think you could find a soul who would disagree.
